Continued Exploration

Growing up I recall always listening to Boyz II Men in the car on the way to school. I have loved their music since a young age and still to this day.  Boyz II Men was originally a 5-person A Capella group, but eventually became a four person group in 1989. The band was made up of Nathan and Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Michael McCary. During the 1990s is when they started gaining international success. It began when Boyz II Men released their single “Motownphilly” and “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” in 1991. These hits eventually lead to the group receiving Grammy Awards and selling millions of albums.

Unfortunately, there is only three members of the group today. Michael McCary left the group in 2003 due to health issues. However, in a article written in January of 2016, McCary stated that, “…we were suppose to do a reunion a couple years back and it all came down to money. It all came down to the fellas wanted to split three ways, instead of four ways and wanted to pay me basically like a baggage handler.” There could be more to the reason why McCary left when he did back in the early 2000s, but either way, the separation didn’t slow the group down as they would continue to make hit single after hit single.

This video is one of their most glorified songs, which is called I’ll Make Love to You. The song tells a story about a man wanting to treat his special woman with respect and give her all the love and attention she deserves.

I’ll Make Love to You – Boyz II Men

The song was written by an artist that goes by the name ‘Babyface,’ and was released in July of 1994. The song starts off with a slow tempo then the artists join in with the rhythm. These artists display what R&R vocals are about, and that is emphasizing the ending of a measure with vibrato.

This next song is what really got me hooked on Boyz II Men’s music. End of the Road tells a story of a relationship ending, but the artist is wanting the relationship to continue on.

End of the Road – Boyz II Men

End of the Road was written by and produced by Babyface, L.A. Reid, and Daryl Simmons. This song was released in 1992 and spent 13 weeks (2nd all-time) at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The rhythm starts out with a percussion beat of 4/4, like most of their songs do, and has a slow tempo. The artists jumps in after a few beats. The melody of this song has the same kind of style as the last song I presented, except for McCary is the bass vocalists.

In conclusion, I think Boyz II Men are the perfect example of what a performer should be. Like all great performers, they inspire people all across the globe to sing and write music. They are also probably responsible for bringing together a lot of couples with their soulful and romantic music.

  1. I absolutely love Boys ii Men. I remember seeing them live when I was 10 and that is a concert i still remember clear to this day. The two songs you listed also happen to be a couple of my top favorites but these songs are also loved by many. Their voices come together so well but just enough for you to hear each one of them individually. Them performing together showcased so many forms of talent in just a voice and they are able to make you not only hear, but feel the lyrics and the music behind. Great post!

  2. Wow, I actually forgot about this group! It is so nice to listen to these songs again! I also learned that the group met in high school at the Philadelphia High School of Performing Arts. That is where they studied classical music and vocal arts.
